I am pleased to share Ecology of Memory: Transgenerational Ecopoetics in Multimedia, a new course available through NoMuLAB – Nordic Multimedia Writing LAB, This six-week studio course has been developed for poets, writers, eco-artists, researchers, and interdisciplinary practitioners who are interested in exploring the relationship between environmental memory, transgenerational storytelling, and multimedia artistic practice. Participation is free through NoMuLAB, an online learning platform dedicated to multilingual, multicultural, and multimedia approaches to writing and literature.
The course approaches poetry as a method of artistic research and critical inquiry. Rather than treating writing as an isolated literary practice, it situates poetic creation within broader ecological, cultural, and historical contexts. Participants investigate how landscapes, archives, oral histories, family narratives, and environmental change shape creative expression, while developing work across multiple artistic forms. The curriculum is structured around five interconnected creative practices: writing, sound, visual art, video, and performance. Together, these practices encourage participants to consider how memory can be documented, interpreted, and communicated through multimedia composition.
The theoretical framework draws from the Environmental Humanities, second-wave ecocriticism, affect theory, and the poetics of memory. The course engages with scholarship by Lawrence Buell, Ursula K. Heise, Stacy Alaimo, Tom Bristow, and Fritjof Capra, among others, to examine ecological interdependence, environmental justice, embodied knowledge, and the cultural dimensions of ecological memory. These perspectives provide participants with conceptual tools that complement their creative practice while encouraging critical reflection on the relationship between literature, ecology, and society.
Throughout the six weeks, participants engage with readings, creative exercises, local environmental observation, archival exploration, and multimedia production. The course encourages the development of an interdisciplinary body of work that integrates textual, sonic, visual, and performative elements. By the conclusion of the programme, participants will have created a coherent portfolio suitable for public presentation, submission to literary publications, or inclusion in artistic archives such as the Poetic Phonotheque.
NoMuLAB provides an important context for this course. Developed through the Multilingual Writing LAB project, the platform offers free educational resources for students, educators, emerging writers, and creative practitioners interested in multilingual and multimedia literary practice. Created through the collaboration between Red Door (Denmark) and Ós Pressan (Iceland), NoMuLAB reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to innovative forms of literary education while supporting multilingual creativity across the Nordic region and internationally.
